thanks to Alanis Morissette confusing it with the concept of "shit happens", ironic is so misused that the Canadian Oxford Dictionary notes:

"It is not recommended to use ironic to describe any mildly surprising, unexpected, coincidental or paradoxical state of affairs."

such as... rain on your wedding day, a traffic jam when you're already late, or a black fly in your Chardonnay.
